Wabash County is a great place to live when it comes to taking care of needs. Six years ago, members of the Ministers Alliance of Wabash County saw a need for a homeless shelter in the area and started laying the groundwork for what we know today as Safe Haven.
Safe Haven opened its doors in 2015 in Mount Carmel and is a shelter for women and women with children. Safe Haven is a 24/7 fully equipped, homeless shelter with four bedrooms, a 16-bed facility with a bathroom in each bedroom, a communal kitchen/dining/living area, a laundry area and a computer room.
Over 150 women and 69 children have called Safe Haven home. The women and children are here because of abuse, a lack of funds or just have nowhere else to turn.
During their stay at Safe Haven, the women work with a Case Manager to establish an individual plan for self-sufficiency. This plan can include educational, counseling, and work goals. Many do find work while at the facility.
Safe Haven depends on volunteers to operate. The volunteers welcome those who are here and answer the phone. They also play a very important part in answering questions and providing information as needed.
Volunteers are always needed, and if you would like to become a volunteer you may call 618-262-2677.
Safe Haven is a non-profit organization and since its inception has relied entirely on donations for its existence. The Board of Directors also conduct many fund raisers throughout the year and also cut expenses wherever possible as they want to be good stewards of what has been given.
Unfortunately, expenses throughout the recent years have been increasing; however, financial contributions have not kept up with meeting needed expenses.
We appreciate all who have supported and helped us provide a home for the homeless during a much needed time in their lives. This service is still needed.
If you wish to volunteer and/or donate, please call 618-262-2677. Donations may be mailed or dropped off at Safe Haven or any First Bank location.
