With the West Salem Chowder scheduled right around the corner for Aug. 17, there are still a few items that need to be addressed.

They are in need of donated desserts. They can be dropped off at the Firehouse anytime the morning of chowder. They also need volunteers to work in the food line in the shelter house. There will be two different shifts of workers.

This is an excellent opportunity for high school Seniors to earn STAR points! Come help out a little or all day!

Additionally, here is some info on the individual events:

If you are participating in the parade or are interested in participating, contact Mike Harris (812-664-5208) or Christy Harris (812-677-0182) for more info or to register.

There will be several categories judged in the parade; the categories are best: business float, church float; decorated ATV, golf cart/lawnmower, vintage car/truck (25 years or older), vintage tractor (25 years or older), motorcycle, or patriotic horse.

There is also a kids division; the categories for that division are as follows: bike/pets, power wheels/misc., non-commercial lawnmower and pet parade.

For the pet parade— the pet parade will have three categories and three first place cash prizes of $50 each. The categories are best dressed pet, best dressed human and best decorated bike, trike, wagon, etc. (non-motorized only).

Meet behind the First Christian Church at 9:30 a.m., judging will be held at 9:45 a.m. and the pet parade will join the main parade at the church and march to the library where prizes and treats will be handed out.

You can enter more than one category and there is no theme so anything goes, and there is no fee to participate.

After the parade has ended, registration for the rock hunt will begin. Kids can meet at the booth on the square at 11 a.m. to sign up and grab a map. The rock hunt concludes at 1 p.m.

There are three separate categories for hunting: preschool and under, K-6, Junior high and up. Prizes available for all age groups.

Something new for this year: the junior high and older group will get some scavenger hunt clues to help them find their rocks.

If interested in helping ahead of the event with prize donations or painting rocks, email Lauren at laurendoelling@gmail.com. Volunteers will also be needed for the day of event with hiding rocks and helping match up prizes. more info about the rock hunt is on Facebook page "West Salem Rocks!"
