Two District 19 Illinois State Police Troopers and a Fairfield woman had to literally run for their lives Tuesday morning to avoid being hit by an out of control box truck that overturned on Interstate 64. The troopers were just east of the Wayne City exit helping change a tire on Peggy Vaught’s 1998 Mercury Mountaineer when a westbound box truck driven by Shi Jinglin, 41 of Flushing, New York went out of control on the ice-covered roadway and hit Vaught’s car before overturning on the grassy shoulder of the highway.
Vaught, 67 and the two troopers were outside the Mercury Mountaineer at the time and were forced to run away from the interstate and down an embankment to avoid being struck. Mrs. Vaught was injured and taken by ambulance to Fairfield Memorial Hospital following the 8:57 A.M. accident. A passenger in Mrs. Vaught’s car, Wilbur C. Vaught, 71 of Fairfield was inside the Mountaineer at the time of the crash and escaped injury. Both troopers escaped injury as well.
