Clayton Andrew “Andy” Swanner, 35 of Crossville has entered a guilty but mentally ill plea to first degree murder in connection with the death of his mother following an arson fire at his home last fall.
In return for the guilty plea to a charge of first degree murder, all other pending charges were dismissed.
During a pretrial hearing Wednesday, Sept., 30, the defense and prosecution stipulated that Swanner was mentally ill during the commission of the offense on the evening of Nov. 7, 2019. Swanner's mother, Cathy Brandenstein, 61, died of her injuries Jan. 10, 2020 at the University of Louisville Burn Center in Louisville, Ky.
Sentencing has been set for Jan. 6, 2021 in White County Circuit Court in Carmi. The sentencing range is between 20-45 years.
