A Grayville man made his first appearance in court Tuesday to face a felony sex charge.

Mark E. Johnson, 50 of County Road 100 North in Grayville has been formally charged in Edwards County Circuit Court with Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse of a family member under the age of 18 – a Class-2 felony. The charge was filed through a criminal information prepared by Edwards County State's Attorney Eric St. Ledger on Thursday, Sept. 19. Jail records show Johnson was booked into the White County jail at Carmi for Edwards County on the evening of Friday, Sept. 20.

The case against Johnson was investigated by agents of the Illinois State Police. A judge set bond in the case at $50,000 or $5,000 cash. Johnson remains in the White County jail pending a preliminary hearing set for Oct. 18 at 9 a.m.

If convicted of the single felony charge, Johnson faces between three and seven years behind bars and a fine of not more than $25,000. Under Illinois law, probation is also a possible sentence for a Class-2 felony.

Edwards County court records show this is the second time Johnson has been charged with sexual abuse. In 1999, Johnson was charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim between the ages of 13-16; also  a Class-2 felony. In March of 2000, the charge was amended to battery – a Class-A misdemeanor. Johnson pled guilty to the misdemeanor charge and was placed on two years of court supervision and ordered to serve two days of periodic imprisonment.
