On Christmas morning, Dec. 25, Michael D. Barnett lost his hard-fought battle against the COVID virus, passing quietly with his wife at his side.
He was born April 26, 1949 in Princeton, Ind., raised in Grayville and moved with his family to Mt. Gilead, Ohio in 1964. Affectionately known as “Barney” to his friends and classmates, he graduated from Mt. Gilead High School Class of 1967. Attended Ohio State University-Mansfield performing in many theatre productions from 1982 through the late 2000’s.
Michael served in the United States Air Force as TSgt, Munitions Specialist, during the Vietnam War in Utapoa,Thailand.
He was the son of the late James “Slim” and Margaret (Aker) Barnett, who preceded him in death, as have his siblings, James W., Terry L. and Larry L. Barnett.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jacqueline “Jacki” (Clair) Barnett of Mansfield, Ohio; as well as children, Richard “Rick” Barnett of Mansfield, Diane (Matt) Visconti of Chesterville, Ohio, Michael (Nicole) McCune of Columbus, Ohio and Dennis ”J.R.” (Crystal) Traicoff Jr. of Mansfield; grandchildren, Hannah Grace of Texas, Ben, Eve, Jocelyn, and Jon Visconti of Chesterville, Ohio, Kelli (Ralph) Begley of Blue Creek, Ohio, Brandon Traicoff of Cleveland, Ohio, Emily Traicoff of Morley, Mich., Brett Traicoff of Silver Springs, Fla; great-grandchildren, Vacilya and Josef Begley of Blue Creek, Ohio; siblings, Ernest (Sue) Barnett of Anchorage, Alaska, Judi (Rex) Strine of Caledonia, Ohio, Kenneth (Martha) Barnett of Mt. Gilead and Donn Barnett of Georgia as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Prior to retirement, Michael was building supervisor for the Richland Academy of the Arts and the Renaissance Theatre. He and his wife were owner/operators of Barnett Pest Control Services of West Palm Beach, Fla.
Michael was active for over 10 years with local Boy Scouts of America with Troop 899, for boys with various disabilities. He received awards as Cubmaster of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Scoutmaster of the Year and Silver Beaver Award.
Michael was active in local and area theatre productions as an accomplished actor, singer, song writer and skilled technician in set design and construction, set dressing, costuming, lights and sound. Happiest being able to perform for an audience of any size.

Michael will be cremated. He requested no public services.
