Dear Editor:

The oft-repeated claim that the Father of Our Country and Betsy Ross created our National Emblem is steeped in Ross family lore from 1870 -- six years before the U.S. Centennial of 1876 and nearly a century after the Revolutionary War.

History credits Founding Father Francis Hopkinson as the Father of the Stars and Stripes. The Flag Manufacturers Association of America (FMAA) issued the following tweet on February 4, 2021:

#FlagFact: The designer of the American flag was Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence as a delegate from New Jersey.
