Weight lifters tested themselves in the first annual Iron Classic Powerlifting Meet hosted by the Iron Jungle in Albion on Saturday.
The meet began directly after the gym’s ribbon cutting. The meet was open to anyone who wanted to participate - members and nonmembers.
From Palatine, Ill. to Fort Branch, Ind., there were eleven participants in total. Competitors were then split into different weight divisions.
The event tested them in three lifts: squat, deadlift and bench press. Winners of each division were awarded with a trophy.
Caleb Smothers of Fairfield won in the 160 pound weight division, Louis Hoover of Fort Branch won the 180 pound division, Matt Phillips of Princeton, Indiana won his 200 pound weight division, as well as the $150 prize of “Top Lifter” overall. Brock O. Barnes of Decatur, Ill. took the top spot of the 220 pound weight division while Mike Downey of Princeton, Ind. dominated the 250 pound division.
The Iron Jungle would like to thank all who came out to support and participate in their first meet, as well as the judges and spotters. They also wish to give a big shout out to Annie Buckles of Sweet Annie’s for serving her famous shaved ice, Gabe Smith of Rebuilt Fitness and Travis Stamp from the National Guard for presenting their services outside the meet.
The meet proved to be a success and they hope to see you next year!
