Former Mount Carmel priest dies

Monsignor Ken Schaefer, former pastor at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mount Carmel died Saturday night, July 11 at Barnes Hospital in Saint Louis.  At the time of his passing, he was serving as pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, Ill.

“Father Ken” as most are people remember him, served as pastor at St. Mary's Parish in Mount Carmel from 1979-1989. After serving ten years in Mount Carmel, Schaefer was named Vocation Director for the Diocese of Belleville and pastor of St. Michael's Church in Paderborn, Ill. In 1984, he was named pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel church in Herrin and was named Monsignor in 1999. 

A native of Millstadt, just south of Belleville, “Father Ken” was ordained a priest on June 8, 1974 after receiving his Master's Degree in Theology at Josephinum Pontifical Seminary in Columbus, Ohio.
