Gary Wayne Meritt, 58, of Clay City, Ill., formerly of Grayville, Illinois, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2020, at his home. He was born July 5, 1962, in Carmi, Illinois, the son of Harold Glen (Floetta) Meritt.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grayville. Gary loved being with his friends and fishing and camping on the sandbar on the Wabash River near Grayville. He was best friends with his German Shepherd dog, Strider, and his two pit bull dogs Scooby and Baby Girl.
Survivors include his mother, Floetta Meritt of Grayville; brothers Glen (Shirley) Meritt of Grayville, John (Marcia) Meritt of Flatwoods, Ky., Rocky Meritt of Newport, Tennessee; sisters Robin (Randy) Cunningham of Parkersburg, Ill. and Leigh Short of Grayville.
He is preceded in death by his father Harold Glen Meritt and brother-in-law Russell Short.
Gary’s wishes were to be cremated. A celebration of Gary’s life will be at a later date.
Cook Funeral Chapel in Grayville is in charge of arrangements.
